Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP)

Speech-language pathologists (SLP) are regulated health professionals. They have obtained at a minimum a master’s degree in speech-language pathology and must be registered with the province’s regulatory college (College of Speech and Hearing Health Professionals of British Columbia). The SLP provides assessments, treatment and consultation services. Qualified SLPs are solely responsible making clinical decisions using clinical professional judgement and are accountable the assigned therapy activities. They are responsible for supervising the speech-language assistants as they implement your child’s therapy plan.

Speech-Language Assistant/ Communication Health Assistant (SLA or CHA)

A speech-language assistant may have a college diplomas or certificates in the field. A CHA/SLA carries out programming as delegated by the supervising SLP. Some of their tasks include following treatment plans, observing and documenting patients’ responses, and performing administrative and support activities. The SLP will monitors your child’s progress through direct observation and discussion with the CHA/SLA. Only an SLP may interpret assessment results and clinical data in order to set therapy targets and make changes to the therapy plan.

Our Autism Program roles: Consultant, Team Leader, and Behavioural Interventionist (BI)/ Therapy Assistant.

1. The Consultant’s role is to select, monitor, and manage therapy goals. Because the Consultant is responsible for goal creation and management, this role is restricted to a regulated allied health professional. The Consultant is responsible for staying up to date with the latest research, Autistic voices and perspectives, and ensuring that all therapy sessions are meeting best practice and evidence-based practice standards.

2. The Team Leader’s job is to manage and support the interventionists who are doing the sessions. They monitor intervention fidelity (the right people doing the right things, right) and provide teaching moments to build capacity and awareness in staff (right thinking). The Team Leader is responsible for scheduling both clients and staff and general program organization. Regular check-ins with interventionists are scheduled at least twice a month, a combination of in person and video review.

3. The Behavioural Interventionist conducts the therapy sessions, using goal set by the Consultant. They are the team member your child sees on the most regular basis. The session frequency is determined by the family’s budget; generally a minimum of 2-hours per week.

Benefits Of Joining Us

All Behavioural Interventionists and Therapy Assistants at the Clinic are employees, meaning that they are paid a living wage at regular intervals as per employment laws in BC. This ensures that staff are financially supported as they support clients. They can focus on service delivery rather than running their own business as an independent contractor in addition to proving therapy. The clinic provides staff with professional liability insurance, supplied materials, and data management. There are regular clinic-wide staff meetings and continuing education to increase our staff’s skills and capacities as interventionists. Our intention is to ensure service quality control and that these “behind the scenes” factors for our employees will translate into greater staff satisfaction, job retention, and quality of services.
